Thiamine Pyrophosphate

Chemical structure of Thaimine pyrophosphate

Vitamin B1 Dependence: Humans do not synthesize Thiamine and therefore require its intake as part of the diet. Thiamine is one of the (many) B types typically called vitamin B1. You may read much more about this and issues regarding its synthesis and deficiencies here.

TPP provides a mechanism to handle C-C bond formations and cleavages at bonds adjacent to a ketone - So long as there is an alcohol or organic acid on that adjacent carbon

Notice the similarities to the enzyme catalyzed reaction where LYS form a covalent intermediate with the substrate. - They BOTH put a =N+ at the SAME position relative to the C-C bond that is cleaved or formed.
