Browser Features to Think About

Some Special Features in This Course

while there are many standard run of the mill content pages, there are also a few pages that will benefit from some features in your browser. These are generally not required, but it may enhance your experience here if you set up your system appropriately.

Special browser features

POP-UP BLOCKERS: If you have a pop-up blocker installed, you will likely want to disable it for this domain. There are many times throughout the material that I open additional windows.
JAVA: (I am trying to replace all of these with JavaScript or Google Graph versions - but may have missed a couple or have not yet completed the task) There are a few pages in which Java applets are embedded. These are interactive programs that allow you to test in real time the effects of varying a few values. You may want to enable the Java applet option in your browser and make sure that you have Java installed on your system. Java is reported to be a security risk and many browsers notify you that you are about to launch an Java applet. It is OK to run the applets from this course - I assure you that there is nothing nefarious about these.

Java on Canvas is broken. All pages that use Java are linked to an external server that is kindly provided by the tech support people. When an external link is used the page does not display in the course like other pages. Rather, you see what appears to be a blank page with a gray bar at the top and some text. Click on the text to open the page from the external server.

In many pages, I use a JavaScript program that allows rotation of molecules in real time along with alteration of the look through scripts that I provide. Canvas cannot display this program either because it is too stupid to find the appropriate files. They too are linked to an external server. Look at the box at the bottom of this page. If the box is black with three gray spheres inside, then the JavaScript program is loaded properly. Please be patient... It may take a few moments for your system to start everything, load the program and start it.

		If the JavaScript program is functional you should see a black square to the left with three gray spheres in it. They should also appear to change their orientation if you "left-click" and drag you mouse around inside the square.
